The regular season of the 2025 college football season has ended, meaning the coaching carousel has just fired up. After Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU, fans everywhere were sent into a frenzy. The Kentucky Wildcats (5-7, 2-6 SEC) then fired their own head coach, Mark Stoops.
Now, the Wildcats have their guy in the Oregon offensive coordinator Will Stein. Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Stein will still be calling the plays for the Ducks during their playoff run. But what exactly are the Wildcats getting with Stein as their new head coach? Well, in short, a young offensive genius.
Stein has been a college OC for four successful seasons. He started out at UTSA, and quickly caught Dan Lanning’s eye after former Ducks’ OC and current Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham departed. His offense is not overly complicated, but Stein understands football. He believes in feeding the ball to his best players while playing balanced offense.
Stein has worked with plenty of quarterback talent, helping evolve and shape NFL prospects. In his time with Oregon, Stein has worked with Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, and Dante Moore. He helped those guys take that next step, getting both Nix and Gabriel to New York as Heisman finalists.
Stein grew up a Kentucky fan, so when he traveled the road of being an OC, this pairing was written in the stars. This year at Oregon, Stein has called an offense that is ranked 12th in points per game, 10th in yards per game, and 8th in points per play. The Ducks have had a balanced run-pass attack, with just over 55% of their plays being called rushing, per TeamRankings.
In the Ducks’ undefeated regular season in 2024, Stein led Oregon to the 17th-best offense in the country. With Gabriel, the current Cleveland Browns’ QB, the Ducks averaged 279.5 passing yards a game. On the ground, the Ducks put out 157.9 rushing yards on average.
Stein just gets football. He runs an effective offense, and that offense translates to wins. At age 36, his potential genius as a coach is through the roof. The Kentucky Wildcats got their guy, and they should be excited.
